BLOOMING GROVE ISD: At Home Learning Beginning March 23

Athome

Blooming Grove ISD issued the following announcement on March 20.

We are in an unprecedented time in our history, and especially K-12 education. Yesterday, Governor Abbott issued an executive order outlining several steps he is implementing to slow the spread of COVID-19 throughout the State of Texas. One piece of his executive order is that schools are to close through April 3, 2020. Additionally, Governor Abbott stated that he may extend this mandatory closure as we approach April 3rd. Blooming Grove ISD will be closed through April 3, 2020. If there will be continued closure, BGISD will notify parents on our social media and via school messenger call outs and email.

Educational Resources:

Blooming Grove ISD administrators, staff, and teachers have been working diligently this week to ensure that we are able to provide instructional continuity for our students. Our goal is to provide instructional support for our students that may take place at home as family commitments will allow. We are providing educational resources for our parents BOTH in a physical packet for those who do not have reliable internet or would prefer paper resources, as well as digital files via our website.

Beginning Monday, March 23, 2020, we will have educational resources available in printed packets for parents to pick up:

  • BG Elementary: Campus Principals will be at the elementary school from 8:00 am - 4:00 pm to answer questions and pass out packets.  The packets will be in bins labeled by grade level for pick up by parents anytime day or evening, outside the front entrance of the school.  If you have questions, you can contact Tiffany Munoz, Elementary principal at tmunoz@bgrove.org or Amanda Martinez, Elementary Assistant Principal, at amartinez@bgrove.org. If students need access to a counselor, they may contact Lori Kirby at lkirby@bgrove.org
  • BG Jr. High: Campus Principals will be at the Jr. High from 8:00 am - 4:00 pm to answer questions and pass out packets.  The packets will be in bins labeled by grade level after this for pick up by parents anytime day or evening, outside the front entrance of the school.  If you have questions, you can contact Doyle Bell, Jr. High Principal at rdbell@bgrove.org or Albert Abshire, Jr. High Assistant Principal, at aabshire@bgrove.org. If students need access to a counselor, they may contact Stephanie Chiselbrook at schiselbrook@bgrove.org.
  • BG High School: Due to the complicated nature of individual class schedules, High School staff has created individual packets by student schedule.  Campus Principals will be at the High School from 8:00 am - 8:00 pm to answer questions and pass out packets. After Monday, if you need a printed packet, please contact BGHS principal, John Paul Gillen at jgillen@bgrove.org or BGHS Assistant Principal, Danny Dennie at ddennie@bgrove.org. If students need a transcript or have questions about college or other academics, they may contact Keitha McDougald at kmcdougald@bgrove.org. If students need access to a counselor, they may contact Stephanie Chiselbrook at schiselbrook@bgrove.org.
Again - If you have internet access and devices and do not want to pick up a physical packet, we are launching a website on Monday, March 23, 2020, that will be full of educational websites, apps, ideas, as well as links to specific resources our teachers have created, including the physical packet available online.  You will find this on our website at www.bgisd.org – click on At Home Learning and COVID-19 Resources.   Teachers will be continuing to add to their folder of resources that will be accessible online.

Medication

If your child has prescription medication in the nurse’s office, please come by Monday, March 23, 2020 from 8:00 am - 12:00 pm at the Elementary or Jr. High campuses to pick up medication.  ONLY a PARENT with an ID may pick up the medication.  If you have questions regarding this, you can contact either of our nurses:

Food Service

As a reminder, we are currently providing lunches for any child ages 0-18 Monday through Friday at the following locations:

  • 11:00 am - 11:30 am: Emhouse at Mailboxes AND Peggy’s Place at Navarro Mills

  • 12:30 pm - 1:00 pm: Barry Post Office AND BG Park
On Monday, March 23rd, we will also have lunches available for pick up from Blooming Grove High School from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm.  If you are needing food and are unable to get to one of these locations, please contact Sharen Lewis, our food service director, at slewis@bgrove.org. If our feeding schedule or locations change, we will be sure to let you know.

Implementing At-Home Learning:

We recognize that this is a difficult time for our students, parents, and staff.  For many of our older students, they may now be tasked with watching their younger siblings, and now their learning has transitioned to home. I ask that we all – parents and staff – have patience and understanding of the demands that may have changed for our students.  We do not expect our students to be completing 8 hours of school work a day.  We do recommend the following:

  • Elementary: 1 to 2 hours a day of activities
  • High/High School: 2 to 3 hours a day of activities
Your childrens’ teachers have all written parent letters, which outline how to contact them for help and support during this time.  This letter is included with the physical packets, and will also be on our website.  Teachers will be available Monday - Friday, from 8:00 am - 3:30 pm, to answer your questions via email and whatever other resource they are using (social media, Remind, Class Dojo, etc.)

Our Blooming Grove Lion teachers, staff, and administrators stand ready to help support all of our parents and guardians as they navigate school at home.  Please contact us if we can help you - all staff emails are listed on our website at www.bgisd.org.  You can also follow us on social media - Facebook (Blooming Grove ISD) and Twitter (@BGroveLions).

When we started this school year, none of our staff imagined that we would be transitioning to an “at-home” environment. Please have patience and understanding for our staff. Their commitment to our students does not and will not waiver! However, they are navigating a new educational environment, and they would appreciate support from our community at this time. If you have the opportunity to reach out to a teacher, I encourage you to offer words of support and encouragement.

Together, we will get through this!  BG...Where our PRIDE is POWER!
