Online pledge to teach controversial Critical Race Theory signed by 1 Bellmead teachers by week ending Feb. 19, a rise of 1

Hs 01

Critical Race Theory will be taught by one more teacher in Bellmead, according to an online pledge from the Zinn Education Project.

The pledge was signed by 26 teachers the week before. It now has 28 pledges from Bellmead teachers by the end of the week ending Feb. 19.

They’re one of the thousands of US teachers pledging to continue educating students about the controversial Critical Race Theory, which explains racism is embedded in US culture and politics.

The new Bellmead teacher wrote ““One has not only a legal, but a moral responsibility to obey just laws. Conversely, one has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws.” – Martin Luther King Jr., "Letter from Birmingham Jail," April 1963We, the undersigned educators, refuse to lie to young people about U.S. history and current events.” when pledging to teach Critical Race Theory.

Though the concept was first suggested in the late 70’s, it has recently exploded as a contentious issue between the American right and left in the last two years.

Many who signed the pledge are defying state bans on the teachings. Arizona, Idaho, Iowa, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas have passed legislation banning discussions about the US being inherently racist.

Other states, such as Montana and South Dakota, have denounced the teachings without passing specific legislation.

In an interview with The Washington Free Beacon, Ashley Varner of the Freedom Foundation accused the Zinn Education Project of providing “left-leaning propaganda to teachers.”

Our children deserve to know about our country's history and black history. Black history is not just one month, it needs taught all year. Being aware of all struggles that American people have gone through will enable our country to grow and eliminate racism.
Eric WrightsonOklahoma passed, and Govermor Stitt signed, HB1775, a poorly written and contradictory law that undermines how we teach history. I refuse to lie to my students, most of whom are African American.
