Belton Independent School District recently issued the following announcement.
Belton ISD announced the selection of two new campus principals on Thursday. Cary Zepernick is slated to take the leadership helm at High Point Elementary while Sheila Surovik is tapped for the position at Belton Early Childhood Center.
The selections will go before the Board of Trustees at their next regular meeting on July 20.
“The role of principal is such an important one. Principals set the tone for exceptional learning on their campuses,” said Superintendent Matt Smith. “After a thorough search and interview process, we are very happy with the candidates who rose to the top and are excited to have them step into these leadership positions.”
Currently serving as an assistant principal in Round Rock ISD, Zepernick has 14 years of experience in elementary education. Her campus administration experience includes opening a new elementary school that specializes in STEAM education.
Through her professional experiences, Smith said, Zepernick demonstrated a commitment to design exceptional learning experiences for students through thoughtful partnerships with teachers, students and parents. She also showed innovative thoughts and a focus on building a positive culture.
“Working with elementary students has allowed me to instill a love of learning early in students’ lives while also finding out what they are passionate about,” Zepernick said. “I am humbled every day to engage in this work and look forward to doing it alongside the High Point Elementary community.”
High Point, which opened in August 2013, had about 630 students enrolled last year.
Zepernick earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Texas State University. She lives in north Austin with her two boys, Jackson, 9, and Ford, 4.
Surovik is a familiar face in the Big Red Community. The veteran educator has served as assistant principal at BECS since 2014 when the full-day pre-kindergarten campus opened. Her career spans 21 years and also includes stints as an early childhood teacher and instructional coach.
BECS serves about 450 pre-K students each year.
“I am looking forward to working closely with our BECS staff and district personnel to provide exceptional learning experiences for Belton ISD’s youngest learners,” Surovik said. “I want to continue to enhance our school community through staff development, family engagement, high-quality instruction, and age-appropriate learning experiences to ensure we meet the emotional, social, and physical needs of our pre-k students.”
Surovik earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Tarleton State University. She’s been married to her husband, Ray, for 23 years and the couple has two grown children, Colton and Kelsey, who attended Belton ISD schools.
Zepernick replaces Amy Armstrong, who accepted a district administrator position in Belton ISD. Surovik follows in the footsteps of Sue Banfield, BECS’ inaugural principal, after her retirement this summer.
