BELTON INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT: Superintendent Seeks Student Voice on New Advisory Council

Community

Belton Independent School District issued the following announcement.

Hearing opinions from students is so important to Dr. Matt Smith that the Belton ISD superintendent is looking to surround himself with these voices.

Smith is forming a Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council composed of students from the district’s three high schools. This group will meet with him and other district leaders monthly to give input and feedback on issues impacting students in Belton ISD.

“Our students are thoughtful and innovative,” Smith said. “They are the future leaders of our city, state and country, and I have great confidence in their problem-solving skills and ability to provide great insight now on the issues that impact them within Belton ISD.”

One of the group’s first tasks will be brainstorming ways to incorporate student voice in other ways across the district, Smith said. He’ll also look to these students as thought partners on how to implement the district’s forthcoming Journey of a Graduate profile, a collective vision that articulates the community’s aspirations for every student in Belton ISD.

Students interested in joining the council should apply online at http://bit.ly/2Xd9KLo by Jan. 15. The application includes providing a teacher reference and responding to this question in 300 words or less: How could/should student voice impact the decisions being made in Belton ISD?

Smith hopes to have the council’s first meeting in February and introduce the advisory group to the Board of Trustees at its Feb. 15 meeting.

In its inaugural year, the council will include only high school students. But Smith plans to expand its reach during the next school year.

“I want our students to have a voice in creating student experiences that challenge them to learn while also supporting their needs,” Smith said. “Belton ISD is focused on creating exceptional learning for each and every student - student voice will help us get there.”
